Jumpstarting your research by searching more effectively

As someone studying, it’s important to know effective research. There are tons of sources everywhere and it takes a good amount of knowledge on where to look.

Researching online is one of the most popular means out there. Thanks to the Internet that’s given us information at the touch of our fingertips, searching’s become easier.

If you want pointers on better, more refined search, check these tips below.

1. Utilize Wolfram Alpha

Wolfram Alpha, or better known as WA is very different from Google. Unlike the latter which gives a ton of results, WA gives you a direct factual answer.

For instance, you need help in answering a mathematical problem. You can simply copy paste it to the query box and WA can give you a solution for it. It even shows you the entire process of arriving to the correct answer.

As with any tool, don’t rely too heavily on it. You still need to keep your brain active, especially if you’re about to take a test.

2. Ask.com

Much as its website name, Ask.com literally gives you answers to your queries. If you typically start your search with Who, What, Where, When or How, Ask.com maybe more reliable compared to Google.

The site gives you a more refined search, giving you a summary of the answers given by each website. You can then click into the websites for fuller descriptions.

3. Google Scholar

Journal databases are also something you need for effective research. Google Scholar especially comes in handy if you’re doing a term paper or your thesis.

It’s a website that lets you in on a free access to peer-reviewed journals. While it may not have the access and permission of private journals or those that charge for fees, it can be a good starting point.

4. Wikipedia

There’s a lot of debate questioning Wikipedia’s credibility, in fact many teachers and professors will not allow you to cite from it.

Luckily for you most references are cited in the footnotes of the page you are visiting. Visiting these footnotes can often yield usable citation sources and can help you expand your knowledge on the subject.

Also check the history and discussion tabs on a Wikipedia article to see if there are any items presented in the article that are controversial.

Research is a vital part to successful studying. Keep these tips in mind to search the best results you can.
